What’s new ?

Νovember 2019A new species has been added to the Greek flora, Crocus novicii V.Randjel. & Miljković by Tsiftsis et al. (2019).

Karamplianis

August 2017: Distribution data from Strid, A. (2016) were added. Also, one more reference (Rukšāns, J., 2015), with the description of Crocus rhodensis.

22 November 2014: one reference was added (Harpke et al. 2014), with the description of a new, endemic to N Greece species, Crocus orphei and redefinition of C. series Reticulari.

17 June 2014: one reference was added (Tan et al. 2014), with the description of one Greek endemic taxon at Series Flavi.

1 June 2014: one reference was added (Dimopoulos et al. 2013). Becouse of that, nomenclatural changes were made at series Crocus, the ‘C. sieberi – clade, series Laevigati and series Speciosi.

30 Dec 2013: Two new references were added (Raus, 1983 and Snogerup et al. 2001) and data on the distribution of C. nubigena, C. biflorus and C. fleischeri at the E Aegean islands was given.

Introduction

 ▪ Crocus L. consists of c. 160 species (Harpke et al 2014, Rukšāns, 2013). It is distributed from Mediterranean Sea (Portugal and Morocco in the west) and Europe to W China and Mongolia. The center of diversity of the genus is Turkey, with more than 70 taxa and Greece with 30 taxa.

 ▪ Crocus belongs to family Iridaceae, subfam. Crocoideae, tribe Croceae, together with Gladiolus L. and Romulea Maratti. The most probable place of origin of the genus is N Africa and the Iberian peninsula.

▪ The original saffron is being obtained from Crocus sativus L., since ancient times. A large number of species is brought into cultivation. The corms of autumn-flowering Crocus species are eaten raw or cooked in ash after gathering in the spring. It seems that extracts of Crocus species has antitumor and cytotoxic activities.

▪ Here, we follow the most recent classification of Petersen et al. 2008 and Harpke et al 2012.

▪ Crocus is an extreme example of varying chromosome numbers ranging from 2n=6 to 2n=70. Even within the same species chromosome numbers might vary. Τhis, according to Harpke et al. (2013), indicates repeat changes in ploidy level during the evolution of the genus.

▪ The leaves of most Crocus species have a unique and distinctive shape in cross section. There is a central square or rectancular ‘keel’ and two lateral ‘arms’ with their margins generally recurved towards the keel. Hair-like papillae are generally present.

Habitat: crocuses can be found at limestone rocks, stony slopes, sparse woodlands, scrub, grassy places, alpine turfs and damp pastures. They generally prefer neutral to slightly acidic soils.

Ακολουθούμε την πιό πρόσφατη συστηματική κατάταξη των Petersen et al., 2008 and Harpke et al., 2012.

In Greece, 32 taxa have been recorded, including C. sativus, 12 are endemic:
